Wales from the Air - from the BBC Documentary Series A Birds Eye from the 1960s

With dramatic mountain ranges, great rivers and natural resources, Wales has a landscape steeped in history and lore, evidenced by its many megaliths, forts and castles, which date back over 5,000 years. Its people are said to retain characteristics from both ancient Britain and the Mediterranean

The BBC produced a documentary series in the 1960s called "Bird's Eye View", a series of helicopter travelogues providing breathtaking views of the British Isles. This documentary approach was revolutionary for its day.

This included "Wales from the Air". The series was broadcast between 1969 and 1971. Wales from the Air was first broadcast in 1971 on BBC2.

Narrator

The Narrator was Rene Cutforth, a BBC correspondent who had reported from some 74 countries on a diverse range of events, including the Korean War and the Dalai Lama's escape to India.

During the Second World War, Rene served in the Army and was seconded to the Ministry of Information. He was wounded and captured in North Africa, and taken as a prisoner of war to Italy and Germany.

Cutforth spent many years living in Wales, or at least having a home there to which he returned from his various assignments across the globe, finding himself growing increasingly fond of the Welsh countryside and the Welsh way of life.

Testimonials
See what some of the guests at the cottage say about their stay

ENG: “It was such an amazing stay in this wonderful palace/cottage.

There are no details missing, it is absolutely cosy, spacious and elegantly decorated. We were surprisingly welcome with wine, bread and sweets, what a great treat!

The area is very nice for retreating and enjoying nature and Welsh hospitality. We could not have had a better stay. Thank you.”

Mr. Jose Luis A.
Malaga, Spain

Mrs. Francoise V

“The cottage is beautifully presented, the little touches like the bread, wine, sweets etc made us feel very welcome, everything was there after a long journey.

We really enjoyed our stay – Thank You”
