Trotting Club
The Amman Valley Trotting Club

The Amman Valley Trotting Club has one of only four all-weather trotting tracks in the UK, two of which are in Wales. Harness racing is an excellent spectator sport that can trace its roots back to Roman Chariot racing.

It is one of the few sports that allows men and women to compete together on an equal level.

The cottage is within a few minutes walk of the Amman Valley Trotting Club, and is ideal accommodation if you are attending any of the twelve or so harness race meetings which are held here every year.

The Amman Valley Trotting Club is a community-led enterprise which provides a purpose-built, half-mile, all weather trotting track, one of only two in Wales. Created and run by local harness racing enthusiasts. Everything is done by volunteers with all monies used on upkeep and improvement.

Situated in the village of Tairgwaith, near Gwaun-Cae-Gurwen, within a short walk of Cwmgors, the track was built on the reclaimed site of two coal slag heaps, spoil from the Maerdy and Steer deep mines. Amman Valley Trotting Club promote on average twelve harness race meetings a year, with harness racing enthusiasts travel from all over Great Britain & Ireland to race at Amman Valley. The track is well supported by local people and is also popular with tourists and visitors to the area.

Many visitors including local and national celebrities attend race meetings here; this helps to promote harness racing and puts the small coal-mining village of Tairgwaith firmly on the map.

The club have recently been awarded funding from various bodies including the Welsh Development Agency, Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council and Amman Valley Enterprises to redevelop the site into one of the premier trotting race tracks in the United Kingdom.
